Car door magnets for business: when they work and when to letter
A car door magnet puts your business name on a personal car or truck and comes off for the weekend. That is why agents, cleaners, inspectors, and new contractors buy them. Magnets have limits, though. They stick to steel alone, they need weekly care, and they can mark the paint if you skip it.
This guide covers which vehicles take a magnet, the care rules magnet makers publish, how to lay out a magnet that reads, and when vinyl lettering is the better buy. To try a door layout with your name, open the free SUV and car wrap tool and pick the minimal style. It works as a magnet layout.
Will a magnet stick to my car?
It sticks if the door panel is steel. Markful says magnets "do not adhere to aluminum, plastic, fiberglass, or body filler" (>Markful). StickyLife warns that some makers use aluminum for lightweight doors and that used cars may have fiberglass parts or filler from repairs (>StickyLife).
The test is simple. Hold a fridge magnet on the exact spot where the sign will go. If it does not hold, a car magnet will not hold. Test the whole area, not one point. A repaired dent can hide filler.
Chicago Fleet Wraps adds two more no-go zones: wrapped panels and fresh paint (>Chicago Fleet Wraps). Master Magnetics says to wait about 90 days for new paint to cure before a magnet goes on (>Master Magnetics).
Care rules from magnet makers
The paint damage people blame on magnets comes from skipped care. The makers agree on the basics:
- Remove it each week. Master Magnetics recommends weekly removal so dirt and moisture do not build up. StickyLife says the same and adds: dry the car and the rear face of the sign.
- Take it off before a car wash. Brushes and water pressure can pull it off. Every source above says so.
- Do not slide it. Lift it off and place it again. StickyLife says dirt dragged under a magnet can damage the paint.
- Keep it flat. Master Magnetics says do not place the magnet over molding. A magnet that bridges a body line can shear off at highway speed.
- Watch the heat. Markful says do not use its magnets on surfaces above 160°F or below -15°F, and to avoid flat sun-facing panels such as hoods.
- Expect uneven fading. Markful notes that the paint under a magnet is shielded from the sun, so long use can leave an outline.
Lay out a magnet that reads
A door magnet is small. Most of the design work is cutting.
- Three lines, no more. Name, what you do, phone. Drop the slogan.
- Phone number biggest after the name. People read it from one parking space over.
- Dark on light or light on dark. White text on a navy magnet, or navy on white. Avoid red on blue.
- Match the door shape. Measure the flat part of the door, below the window and above the body line. Order the magnet to fit inside it.
- One color for the background. Photos behind text make the text hard to read from a distance.
Magnet or vinyl lettering?
| Door magnet | Cut vinyl lettering | |
|---|---|---|
| Comes off for personal use | Yes | No (removal is a shop job) |
| Works on aluminum or fiberglass doors | No | Yes |
| Weekly care | Remove, clean, dry | Wash with the car |
| Risk if neglected | Moisture under the magnet, paint outline | Lifting at the edges over years |
| Looks like part of the car | Less | More |
For a car you drive on weekends with your family, a magnet makes sense. For a truck used for work alone, vinyl lettering looks better and needs no weekly routine. Wraptor Graphix lists a car door logo package from $299 and car logo and lettering from $795 (>Wraptor Graphix). For larger coverage, read how much a van wrap costs.
Magnets for a USDOT number
If your truck needs a USDOT marking, federal rule 49 CFR 390.21(d) says the marking may be "a removable device" if it meets the same rules: both sides, sharp contrast, and readable from 50 feet in daylight (>eCFR). A magnet can carry it. A magnet that blows off on the highway leaves you out of compliance, so many fleets letter the DOT line in vinyl. See USDOT number decal requirements.
Who uses door magnets
- Real estate agents. A magnet keeps the personal car personal on weekends. Check what your state's advertising rules require on it in realtor car wrap rules.
- Cleaning services. See cleaning service car wrap ideas.
- Home inspectors. See home inspector SUV wrap ideas.
- New contractors testing a name before they pay for a wrap. See electrician pickup truck lettering and handyman pickup truck lettering.
Design your magnet layout
- Open the free SUV and car wrap tool.
- Type your business name, tagline, phone, and website. Pick two colors and add a logo.
- See 24 free watermarked previews in 6 styles. Look at the minimal style: it shows the name and phone on the door with no printed background, which is the same layout a magnet uses. No account. The previews render in your browser.
- Send the layout to a magnet printer or sign shop with your door measurements.
Clean files cost $9 for one concept plus its yard sign, or $29 for all 24. The matching 24x18 yard sign uses the same colors, so your car and your lawn signs match.
FAQ
Do car door magnets work for business? Yes, on steel doors, with weekly care. They suit personal cars used for work. They do not stick to aluminum, plastic, fiberglass, or body filler.
Can car magnets damage paint? They can if left on. Moisture and dirt build up under the magnet. Magnet makers recommend removing it each week, drying both surfaces, and taking it off before a car wash.
Will a magnet stick to an aluminum truck door? No. Test the spot with a fridge magnet. If it does not hold, use vinyl lettering.
Can I use a magnet for my DOT number? Federal rule 49 CFR 390.21(d) allows a removable device if it meets the marking rules, including being readable from 50 feet in daylight.
