How long does a vehicle wrap last?

Short answer. A wrap printed on cast vinyl and installed by a pro is rated for 5 to 7 years outdoors. Budget vinyl can start to fail in a year or two. How you wash and park the truck decides where in that range you land.

This guide covers what shops say about wrap life, one shop's numbers by vehicle type, what shortens a wrap's life, and the washing rules 3M publishes. When it is time for a new wrap, plan the layout with the free van wrap design tool.

What shops say

One shop's numbers by vehicle type

Chicago Fleet Wraps publishes average wrap life from its own installs, for 3M IJ180Cv3 with 8519 laminate in Chicago weather (>Chicago Fleet Wraps):

Vehicle Average wrap life
Box trucks 6.4 years
Sedans and SUVs 5.5 years
Cargo vans 5.2 years
Pickup trucks 4.8 years

The shop says pickups run shorter "due to bed flex and tailgate wear." It names edge lifting at door handles and mirror caps as its most common warranty claim. One shop, one climate. Treat it as a guide, not a promise.

What shortens a wrap's life

  1. Cheap film. Calendered or budget vinyl shrinks and cracks sooner. Ask your shop which film brand and product line the quote uses.
  2. Sun. 3M says vinyl graphics "are degraded by prolonged exposure to sun and atmospheric pollutants" and advises a garage or shade when possible (>3M). The roof and hood take the most sun.
  3. Brush car washes. 3M says brush washes "may cause dulling or scratching and can cause lifting around the edges."
  4. Pressure washers held close or at an angle. Edges lift first.
  5. Bad prep. Chicago Fleet Wraps says panel adhesion failures come from vehicles that were not cleaned and decontaminated before install.
  6. Wax on matte film. 3M advises against wax, abrasive polish, or cutting compounds on matte or textured films.

How to clean a wrapped truck

These steps come from 3M's care page (>3M):

  1. Wait a week. Do not wash for the first week after install so the film reaches full bond. Wait longer in cold weather.
  2. Rinse first. Spray off as much grit as you can.
  3. Wash by hand. Use a wet, non-abrasive detergent and a soft cloth or sponge.
  4. Rinse and dry. Use a silicone squeegee and a clean microfiber cloth to cut water spots.
  5. Spot clean bugs and sap. Soak with hot, soapy water for a few minutes and rinse. No scrubbing tools.
  6. Touchless over brushes. If you use an automatic wash, 3M says touchless is best.

If you pressure wash

3M allows it under these limits:

When to replace a wrap

3M says that if graphics start to discolor or turn brown, remove them at the first sign, to avoid staining the paint below. Other signs it is time: cracks, edges that keep lifting after repair, and faded color on the roof and hood.

Most shops charge extra for removal. Wraptor Graphix, for one, lists removal and body repair as separate line items (>Wraptor Graphix). Ask for removal on the same quote as the new wrap.

A new wrap is a chance to fix what the old one got wrong: a phone number set small, a service you dropped, a website that changed.

Plan the next wrap

  1. Open the free van wrap design tool. For other vehicles, use the box truck, pickup, or trailer pages.
  2. Type your business name, tagline, phone, website, and license line. Pick two colors.
  3. See 24 free watermarked previews in 6 styles. No account. The previews render in your browser.
  4. Take the layout to your shop with the old wrap's photos and ask what to change.

Clean files cost $9 for one concept plus its yard sign, or $29 for all 24. For budget numbers, read how much a van wrap costs, box truck wrap cost, or trailer wrap cost.
